Weight Watchers has come up with a new tweak to its tracking system and plan. Last year or the year before, it came up with a new plan that essentially pointed people to foods with less fat and less sugar. I’d been pointing myself to foods with less sugar since 2011, and I even told Weight Watchers about it. But when they asked me to share my story for their One Amazing Day event in 2013 they asked me to tone down the greatly reduced sugar part of the story because they didn’t want people thinking they had to deny themselves of anything. I’ve been working on a closet project. The calendar shows the season of fall is here, but there seems to be a hang up in the weather. (High eighties and humid.) So whether or not to put the summer clothes away and move into fall and winter is the question. Hang? er not? I started the transition, but my closet needed a clean out.
The answer for my closet project last week was to get rid of the excess hangers, or as I like to call them sometimes, hang-ups. I think that could be a good way to approach major projects in general (is that a colonel of wisdom?).
What is the hang up? Can I just toss it out? Or at least remove it to a different place so I can move forward with this particular goal? Will it be useful again? Or is it time to pitch it? It’s a home run-down if I hang onto hangups that don’t work for me. (This goes for clothes I just don’t like or don’t wear, as well as the metal, wood, or plastic devises that keep them on the closet rod.)
Which leads me to the idea of hangups offending (off-ending, or messing up a goal). I think I’m onto something big. Sometimes hang ups get tangled together. Reach for one and it doesn’t come clean. Or it brings out a bunch and makes a mess. Better to keep the hangups to a minimum, I think.
But back to the closet. I like the idea of the closet being a place of change. It’s easier to change if there’s not a lot of clutter, including hangups, in the way. This is a multi-level thought that I want to ponder for awhile. It may seem like I’ve already pun-dered it to death, but I think I need to think about it until I get to the “oh” moment. That may be the key to changing the “mom meant” to do something to try-umph.
Writing my thoughts has been a big part of me changing my paradigm about how I eat. It may seem like a hangup to need write about things, but I find it helps me keep order. Sometimes I write to distract myself from eating between meals. Other times, I write to explore my thoughts from a different angle.
Originally, I shared my thoughts on the Weight Watchers community blog site. I was using the Weight Watchers online tracking tools along with some sugar addiction management rules to try to get some control over my health. (I had some hang-ups about my Weight Watchers meeting room memories.) I lost a lot of weight, got rid of some hang ups, and I gained a support group.
With the encouragement of a lot of people, I published a book from my Weight Watchers blogging experience. It’s helped me when I’ve gone back and remembered how I used to be (obese and unhealthy) and how I changed. I’ve had positive feedback to let me know that sharing my thoughts has helped others in their journeys.
Weight Watchers discontinued the blogging site last year and I started blogging more (e’en) here. I’ve also tried to use Weight Watchers Connect. I’ve had ups and downs with my addiction management. I think that has to do with life. I haven’t gone back to eating sugar, but I struggle with eating between meals as an emotional or stress reaction. (Food does provide a fleeting measure of relief, but it’s too close to self medication or using drugs for this addict.)
I don’t write as often as I used to. Perhaps I’ve accumulated some hang-ups along the way? It’s a continual process. Working on, or in, the closets. Seeking to change. For the better. It’s worth it.
PS. I’ve had a lot of requests to publish a cookbook. But I’ve also had a lot of hang-ups about doing it. The project seemed way to big for me. A special deal for free extra pages in photo books with Shutterfly helped me get past one hangup: I needed to see what I could do without spending a huge amount of money.
I put together my first attempt at a cookbook last week. Soon, I’ll have a physical book I can work from. I’ll be able to see what works and what doesn’t. I’ll be able to see what quality pictures I need. I’ll be able to get feedback about how to organize the recipes and what else I can include. I think this book will toss out a lot of hangups, too. What has seemed impossible may just turn out to be I’m Possible again. The I’m Possible Chef.

But what I want to do is write a review of the company we ordered personalized napkins from. I ordered them on Friday and then reviewed my order on Sunday (mostly because I just wanted to see them again. It’s a lovely design and the colors work nicely.) But upon reviewing the order, I noticed a typo which made my heart sink. I sent an email to the “contact us” even though I’d checked a box on the order form saying I had proofed and previewed the order to my satisfaction.
Yesterday, I called the company when they opened and talked to a woman who listened to my story and said she would see what she could do if the napkins hadn’t gone to production yet. When she checked, she could see that someone had already remedied the problem in response to my email. That typo for this type O (see my last blog post) is now the way it should be.
I’m a fan of this napkin company. Check out The Stationery Studio even if you only want to play with their design-your-own napkins feature. I don’t know if their prices are competitive or not. But I do know I’m glad we went with them because they’re the right type for me.
Another review that’s on my mind is my dentist. I had a dentist appointment after the napkin order on Friday. Mind you, I didn’t know about the typo yet, but I was relaxed enough to be a little startled when the hygienist put the chair up and asked me to rinse. I was almost asleep! That’s a pretty good review right there, but the review I really liked was the conversation I had with the hygienist before she started cleaning my teeth. She has read my book and really liked it. She thinks her daughter would like it. She also liked the puns that are liberally sprinkled throughout my writing. As I was talking to her, I realized it’s a pretty good personal review that I’m still on my I’m Possible Journey: Learning to Live with Sugar Addiction. On Friday afternoon, my husband and I had an appointment with a retirement planner–not to discuss new tires for our cars, but to discuss what happens when paychecks become pension checks. The man we met with has read my book (I gave him a copy) and liked it. He said he had just noticed my book on the shelf and was thinking he should have his dad read it. (His dad had just announced he was going to get healthy.) What I liked about his review was that he said he wasn’t thinking about his upcoming appointment with us. It just seemed like a good book for someone who was wanting to make some healthy changes.
But speaking of retirement, I wanted to leave a review of a book series written by my friend Jena C. Henry. She explores relationships as they navigate life in retirement. It’s a humorous and real look at the path to new normals in the golden years. If you’re interested, you might want at least read the reviews on Amazon or look at her website. I met her in person and she’s as real as her writing.
Saturday afternoon I was talking with another person and the subject of weight loss came up. She hasn’t read my book from cover to cover, but she said she likes to read little bits at a time for motivation and inspiration. (That’s how I like to read it, too.) We were talking about selective memory for food. I just shared that when I remember how a food makes me feel along with the taste of it, I can usually stick with the memory of the taste and avoid how it would make me feel if I were to eat it. That’s the kind of stuff that’s in my book. Her review helped me know that what helps me can possible help someone else. A validation of sorts.
Speaking of sorts, I was a bit out of sorts when I got the marketing report from my recent campaign with Frank.ai Even though the ads in my campaign got a lot of clicks and impressions and my website had thousands of new viewers, I had no book sales. Unfortunately, I felt like it was a review of my book that was: don’t bother to take look. Fortunately, my husband saw it differently. He just said the target audience wasn’t right.
My goal in publishing a book was to have something to refer to (or review) when I wanted to remember how I got from where I was to healthy. I wanted to be able to remember the bad stuff without having to relive it. That objective has been, and continues to be, met. My other goal was to help people who were dealing with sugar addiction or other food related struggles. Based on my Amazon reviews, I’ve helped a few people with that. And I think that’s good.
But the marketing results were a little off putting in my head. I’m not knocking Frank. But, to be frank, I think I wasn’t quite ready for marketing. Not quite yet. I’ll continue to write because that’s part of what helps me manage my sugar addiction. I’ll consider revamping my maureenaliprandi.com website to include recipes and newsletters and direct sales, but only as it fits into my life. Not to fit my life into it. (That’s a profound statement that I will try to consider in my amateur ways.)
Right now, I need to review the lawn and cut it. When I come in from that, it will be time to review the washer and transfer the clean clothes to the dryer.

I went to Maine today. It was a last chance to visit my son and his family before they move farther away than a day trip. I left Connecticut before 6am and it dawned on me a little while later that I was driving to Vacationland (Maine’s nickname) on Friday of an extra long weekend (Independence Day) I was early enough to avoid traffic on the way there. I did encounter some slowdowns on the way home, but nothing like the jam on the northbound side of I-95 as I headed out of Maine and through New Hampshire and into Massachusetts. The outside temperature was in the high eighties and I think it’s safe to say that it was a hot jam.
I was tired on the way home. I stopped at a grocery store and bought some cherries and apricots and roast beef (for the protein) and had a planned snack that lasted a long time and involved more food than I probably needed. I stayed awake and alert though.
About an hour away from home, I felt like stopping for more food. I was aware that I wasn’t hungry and it was more of an emotional or addictional response. In my state (Connecticut and mental), I could feel myself planning where I could stop and what I would buy. Yes, it was me looking for a hit. And then, just as I approached the exit, I got a phone call. Saved by the bell. Really. I needed that intervention and it worked.
I think I can take that experience and use it to bolster me tomorrow when the addiction tries to sweet talk me into something I really don’t want, or need.
What I really want is control and feeling good. Just like I wanted 5 and a half years ago when I started on my I’m Possible Journey. I don’t want a traffic jam in my head. I need to remember that actually I can.
Speaking of traffic, I was looking at the map of countries represented in my readership and saw that my blog has had traffic from 50 countries. I thought that was pretty exciting.
On the information super highway, people all over the world have stopped by to read my blog. Perhaps for some it has been a little rest stop. And maybe for others, it has been a motivational pick up. Others might have viewed my stream of consciousness as a traffic jam of words. Perhaps someone has come by feeling jammed and left feeling a little less stuck up. Or something.
Hopefully, I’ve helped someone smile along the way. And along the way, some folks have left comments that give me a boost and make me smile.

It’s one of those days. I was making my smoothie this morning. Fresh ginger. Fresh mint (picked from my back yard moments earlier). Frozen mango. Whey powder. Acacia Fiber. Chia (good chia). Baby spinach. Grapefruit seltzer. MCT oil (that’s Medium-chain triglyceride derived from coconut oil).
